Location: Arthurs Seat, Victoria
Client: Arthurs Seat Eagle Pty Ltd
Division: Land
Discipline: Geotechnical Engineering
Service: Landslide Risk Assessment
Intrax was recently engaged by Arthurs Seat Eagle Pty Ltd to assess the landslide risk associated with a proposed hillside luge planned for construction beneath the iconic Arthurs Seat Eagle gondola.
The proposed luge track will descend from the Summit Station down the steep slopes of Arthurs Seat, making landslide risk a key consideration for planning and design. With the site located within an Erosion Management Overlay (EMO) zone governed by Mornington Peninsula Shire, a comprehensive geotechnical investigation and risk assessment was vital to meet planning obligations and ensure public safety.
Our Role
Led by Associate Geotechnical Engineer Joseph McPherson, the Intrax Forensic and Geotechnical teams conducted a detailed landslide risk assessment focused solely on the luge track alignment. Our objective was to:
- Assess underlying geological and geomorphological conditions
- Identify potential landslide hazards along the proposed route
- Evaluate risk to life and property
- Recommend control measures to reduce and manage risk
- Confirm compliance with local planning overlays and risk tolerances
This assessment builds on Intrax’s previous work in the area, including landslide studies for the existing gondola system. The current luge track alignment largely follows the same corridor, allowing our team to draw on both new field data and historical findings.
Recommended Controls
To ensure long-term safety and compliance, Intrax provided detailed geotechnical recommendations, including:
- Realignment of the proposed track to avoid historical landslide zone
- Anchoring track foundations into stable residual soil or weathered granite, particularly between pylons 5 and 9
- Implementing and maintaining erosion protection measures
- Regular inspections for signs of instability such as boulder movement or tension cracks
- Re-vegetation of disturbed soil with appropriate stabilisation methods
These recommendations are designed to help reduce risk from shallow soil creep, rock fall and earth slides – hazards previously observed in the area.
Outcome
The landslide risk assessment conducted by Intrax has provided the project team with clear, practical guidance to support safe and sustainable development of the luge system. Our work ensures that the thrill of the ride is underpinned by sound engineering – protecting people, property and the environment.
At Intrax, we’re proud to provide expert geotechnical advice that contributes to community safety and supports the responsible development of iconic Victorian destinations like Arthurs Seat.
